Curves Annual Food Drive
In March, Curves in Ilkeston once again participated in the Curves Annual Food Drive. Members donated 312lbs of food. All of the food collected this year during the food drive has gone to the Hopewell Christian Trust. This is a group of churches working together in the Ilkeston area to help those in need.
The Hopewell Christian Trust is a registered charity (Number 1073277). The Citizens Advice Bureau is just one of the organisations that refer people to the trust if they no longer qualify for benefits. The trust provides food parcels for those in need.
The trust is based in Kirk Hallam where they have a small community cafe which is operated entirely by volunteers and relies completely on donations.
Curves in Ilkeston Raise Money for Derby Breast Care Services
Once again, in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Curves in Ilkeston held fundraising events in October for Derby Breast Care Services and raised £1250. The first event was a sponsored walk around Shipley Country Park on October 12th. A Holistic Beauty and Craft Fayre was held at Curves on OCtober 25th. Other fundraising activities have been held in the club. This is the third year that Curves has raised money for this wonderful organisation.
Like some of the members of Curves, the owner of Curves in Ilkeston, Marjorie Rippin, has been affected by breast cancer. Marjorie was told she had breast cancer in December 2005. She says "When I was told I had breast cancer and would need a mastectomy, I felt as if I had been kicked in the stomach. Everything around me just stopped and I couldn't hear anything else that anyone was saying. Veronica, one of the breast care nurses, accompanied my husband and me to a private, quiet and pleasantly decorated room where we were able to sit comfortably and talk through all of our concerns. Veronica sat and talked with us for over an hour to make sure we completely understood what was going to happen next and what to expect over the coming months. Since then, the breast care nurses have always been there when I had additional questions or worries and have helped see me through every step of my treatment."
The Derby breast care nurses help women and their families deal with the emotional impact of being diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as the medical issues. Part of that is ensuring that there is a comfortable, non-threatening environment where patients can talk through their worries and concerns. The Breast Care Services charitable fund helps provide this environment. Derby Hospitals Charity (registered charity no 1061812) exists to support all aspects of the work of Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The charity is made up of funds relating to various areas within the hospital. One of these funds is the Breast Care Services Fund 21004.
Liz Blackman Visits Curves
The Member of Parliament for Erewash, Liz Blackman, dropped into Curves in Ilkeston on Friday 6th June to help celebrate Curves Open House and to participate in the training on offer. She met up with owner Margie Rippin who put Mrs Blackman through her paces.
The MP said, "I really enjoyed the experience as each piece of equipment allowed me to exercise at my own rate. I wish the business every success."
New Wall Art
We are constantly trying to make Curves more welcoming and comfortable. We have recently put new art on the walls, including a mural of women working out created by one of our members, Eileen Bestwick.
How Much Music Do You Need?
Music is an important part of the experience of working out, but of course, we cannot just put any CD on. It needs to have a lively beat. However, we have over 55 CDs in our CD changer covering a wide range of music - all at 140 beats a minute - and we keep adding to the collection. We have rock, pop, latin, oldies, you name it. So there should be something for everybody!
