Curves in Ilkeston Raises £800 for Derby Breast Care Services
In support of National Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, members of Curves in Ilkeston took part in a fundraising event for Derby Breast Care Services. They raised £800 in a walk at Shipley Country Park.
Like some of the members of Curves, the owner of Curves in Ilkeston, Marjorie Rippin, has been affected by breast cancer. Marjorie was told she had breast cancer in December 2005. She says "When I was told I had breast cancer and would need a mastectomy, I felt as if I had been kicked in the stomach. Everything around me just stopped and I couldn't hear anything else that anyone was saying. Veronica, one of the breast care nurses, accompanied my husband and me to a private, quiet and pleasantly decorated room where we were able to sit comfortably and talk through all of our concerns. Veronica sat and talked with us for over an hour to make sure we completely understood what was going to happen next and what to expect over the coming months. Since then, the breast care nurses have always been there when I had additional questions or worries and have helped see me through every step of my treatment."
The Derby breast care nurses help women and their families deal with the emotional impact of being diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as the medical issues. Part of that is ensuring that there is a comfortable, non-threatening environment where patients can talk through their worries and concerns. The Breast Care Services charitable fund helps provide this environment. Derby Hospitals Charity (registered charity no 1061812) exists to support all aspects of the work of Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The charity is made up of funds relating to various areas within the hospital. One of these funds is the Breast Care Services Fund 21004.
This is the second year that Curves has been involved in raising money for this wonderful organisation. Joanna Smalley, the manager of Curves in Ilkeston is shown here handing over the money raised to Marlene Gale, MacMillan Lead Breast Care Nurse and Karen Ives-Smith, Breast Care Specialist.
Curves Introduces The End of Dieting As You Know It
Introducing the Curves 6 Week Solution. Six weeks of small, intimate classes where you'll learn how to lose weight and keep it off for good. Classes start on 22nd January
Many women have a list of diets they've tried over the years and the one thing all these diets have in common is that they often fail. Why? They leave you hungry and deprived, and they slow your metabolism, setting you up for a never-ending cycle of yo-yo dieting. The Curves 6 Week Solution changes all that. Contact us to find out how and to get more information.
Curves Food Drive
During the month of March, members of Curves in Ilkeston collected over 200kg of food and clothing as part of Curves International's Food Drive. The 180 Curves centres across the UK took part in the month-long initiative which raised 62,556kg of food in the UK last year and 4.9 million kilos internationally.
Last year, the items collected in Ilkeston will be donated to Borrowash House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, and a homeless shelter in Derby.

A Poem About Curves
One of our members, Eileen Bestwick, recently put her thoughts about Curves into verse:
I do it three times per week, Others do it more
Mainly I do it standing up, Sometimes I do it on the floor
I stretch my arms and my legs, My belly and my bum
I exercise while I have fun
It keeps me supple, Others lose weight
I'm monitored and measured, Even my heart rate
There's lots of good music, To keep me on the go
But mirrors, lycra and men, Are a definate No, No
So where do I recommend you go, To get fit without pain
I vote for Curves on Bath Street, Again and Again
